Du-Shieng Chien, Ph.D. President & CEO SunTen Phytotech
Dr. Chien received his Ph.D. in biopharmaceutics
and pharmacokinetics from the University of Iowa in 1986.
He has held several management and scientific positions in
the National Health Research Institutes, Neurogen, Bayer, and Allergan
Inc., being responsible for pharmacokinetic and metabolic functions
in support of new drug discovery and product development.
Dr. Chien is a member of the Rho-Chi, American Association
of Pharmaceutical Scientist (AAPS), American Chinese Pharmaceutical
Association (ACPA), and Society of Chinese BioScientists in America
(SCBA). Dr. Chien is the inventor
of 4 U.S. patents and has published 80 research papers in major pharmaceutical
and medical journals and books.
Matthew B. Smith Managing Director Investments at Connecticut Innovations, Inc.
(CII)
Mr. Smith has a multifaceted range of healthcare
experiences marked by leading edge business developments.
His experiences include co-authoring the first federally funded
HMO feasibility study and healthcare ventures with GTE New Ventures
Corporation as well as other major medical firms, such as Technicon
Corporation, American Hospital Supply Corporation and National Patent
Development Corporation. Before
joining CII, Mr. Smith co-founded CompreMedx Cancer Centers Corporation
(the first publicly traded firm to build freestanding cancer centers
in partnership with oncologists and radiologists), co-owned Kramex
Corporation (a privately owned portable and mobile radiology manufacturing
and distribution firm) and assisted in the turn around of Medical
Sterilization, Inc. (a publicly traded surgical instrumentation firm).
In addition, he co-founded Health Excel Management, Inc. (a
managed care firm specializing in disease state management) and turned
around HelpMate Robotics, Inc. (a publicly traded medical transport
firm). He has served on the
Board of Directors for New World Healthcare Solutions, Inc., Baseline
Medical, Inc. and Campus Connects, Inc., and was Managing Director
of Negin-Smith Partnership, a private real estate venture. Mr. Smith
has been on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
of Yeshiva University and Quinnipiac University School of Business
and served as the first Executive Director of the Q.U. Entrepreneurship
and Small Business Management Institute.
Jon Soderstrom, Ph.D. Managing Director Office of Cooperative Research Yale University
Dr. Soderstrom was a founding board member
and past president of the Association of Federal Technology Transfer
Executives as well as a member of the Licensing Executive Society
and Association of University Technology Managers where he is currently
Vice President for Public Policy and a member of the Board of Directors
and Executive Committee. He
is frequently asked to lecture and teach seminars on various aspects
of the technology transfer process and economic development both within
the United States and abroad. He
has testified before Congress on technology transfer issues and served
as an expert witness in patent infringement litigation.
Since joining the Office of Cooperative Research at Yale in
1996, Dr. Soderstrom has participated in the formation and operation
of more than 25 new ventures including polyGenomics, Molecular Staging,
Agilix, Asilas Genomic Systems, Achillion Pharmaceuticals, PhytoCeutica,
Protometrix, Applied Spine Technologies and VaxInnate.
Collectively, these companies have raised over $300 million
in professional venture capital.
William M. Wardell, M.D.,
Ph.D. President Wardell Associates International, LLC
Dr. Wardell has his own consulting firm, Wardell
Associates International, LLC, in Princeton, NJ.
A large part of his consulting includes solving problems in
drug development, regulatory approval, and safety, for both large
pharma companies and small startups.
He spent 15 years in academic medicine (Clinical Pharmacology
and Medicine) before entering the pharmaceutical industry, where he
has spent 20 years in management positions in large pharmas and biotech,
and in a large contract research organization.
He testified as an expert in drug development in several congressional
hearings. In addition to drug
discovery and development and its contribution to medicine, his interests
include clinical pharmacology, clinical trial methodology, drug safety,
regulation, biotechnology, pharmacogenomics, and botanicals--topics
on which he has published over one hundred scientific papers and four
books. His pharmaceutical and
biotechnology industry experience includes: President, Protein Engineering
Corporation (now DYAX); Senior-VP, Drug Development, Parke-Davis;
VP-Medical Director, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals; Senior
Scientific Officer at Covance and Executive Director of the Covance
Institute for Drug Development Sciences.
Bill Wardell earned his M.A., Ph.D. (in pharmacology), and
M.D. at the University of Oxford (UK), and was a Merck International
Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology and Medicine under Dr. Louis Lasagna
at the University of Rochester / Strong Memorial Hospital. |
